T-Pain Recalls Slipping into Depression After Usher Told Him He "Fucked Up" Music
The singer known for his use of Auto-Tune got his feelings hurt in a big way back in 2013
In an episode of Banger Films' This Is Pop limited series, T-Pain recalled a moment in 2013 when Usher told him that he "fucked up music for real singers" because of his use of Auto-Tune.
T-Pain said he and his "friend" were making small talk on a flight to the BET Awards when their conversation turned nasty.
"I went back and was like, 'So how is everything going?' And he was like, 'Man, I wanna tell you something, man.' And I'm like, 'What's good?' I thought he was about to tell me something. He sounded real concerned," T-Pain said.
"And then he was like, 'Yeah man you kinda fucked up music,'" he recalled.
"I didn't understand," T-Pain explained. "Usher was my friend. He was like, 'Yeah man you really fucked up music for real singers.' Literally, at that point, I couldn't listen. Is he right? Did I fuck up music?"
He added: "That is the very moment — and I don't think I even realized this for a long time — that's the very moment that started a four-year depression for me."
Usher has yet to speak publicly on the matter, though fans and critics have come to T-Pain's defence in the wake of the accusations.
"Usher put T-Pain into depression by saying autotune f*cked up music and then went and released 'OMG,' a song full of autotune that went No.1. This man a whole demon," wrote one fan.
Music critic Anthony Fantano chimed in: "Why does everyone give T-Pain such a hard time?"

The fact that everyone who came at T-Pain for using auto-tune ended up using it afterwards is just another lesson on how innovation works— BRI (@BriMalandro) June 21, 2021

T-Pain is one of the nicest most genuine people I've met and everyone at Adult Swim loves him, he's family. Usher, Jay Z, Kanye, and Future (among many others) owe him an apology. He's a pioneer and they weren't ready. That's on THEM. https://t.co/XpCrHWHGxz— SPIRAL CURSE DEMARCO (@Clarknova1) June 22, 2021
