Published Jul 07, 2020Last week, Halle Berry explained in an interview that she had been considering an upcoming role as a transgender man. The controversial discussion was met with a great deal of criticism, and Berry has done what so few before her have done — she's apologized and vowed to do better.
The first announcement took place in an interview with hairstylist Christin Brown, where Berry revealed that she was considering a role as a transgender man. Aside from the fact that a cisgender woman playing a transgender man in 2020 is not exactly the best move, Berry misgendered the character numerous times in the interview.
In her Instagram story, Berry apologized for even considering the role.
"Over the weekend I had the opportunity to discuss my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man, and I'd like to apologize for those remarks," she said. "As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories."
She continued: "I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days and I will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake. I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera."
